An Audi R8 RS version is currently in the works for the second generation of the supercar slated to come out in 2015. Official details are starting to emerge about Audi’s halo model as Quattro GmbH managing director Heinz Hollerweger has disclosed plans for a more powerful R8 version which he describes as being “very interesting for us.” Without going too much into details, he went on to say this derivative will be powered by the familiar V10 5.2-liter naturally aspirated engine.
Interestingly, Hollerweger said in the interview with Top Gear magazine that we should look at the Lamborghini Huracan when thinking about the Audi R8 RS which means power will be rated somewhere in the region of 610 HP (448 kW) and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm). Equally just as important, Hollerweger said the second generation R8 is going to ride on the same platform as the Lamborghini Huracan but will have different track widths.
He also said that a manual gearbox will not be offered in the new R8 as there’s very little demand for one in the current version, with less than 5 percent of customers ordering a manual R8. Sometime in the future, Hollerweger said that there will be a more focused R8 featuring a rear-wheel drive layout which will likely be offered as a special edition.
