Audi R8 rival coming from BMW?

the Audi R8 has become an undeniable success, even managing to muster praise from the ultimate critic Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame,  and that’s no small feat.

However, it seems BMW has noticed the attention and praise the R8 has received and may well be working on a rival to try and steal some of the R8’s thunder.  BMW has been toying with the idea for some time now of bringing back a big, high powered flagship coupe to its line-up. However, BMW has had mixed results when entering into the super car/ fast GT segment in the past with the M1 and 8 Series – primarily due to mistiming the market and they’ve rightfully been apprehensive until this point about making another attempt.

Even BMW’s head of design, Adrian Van Hooydonk has expressed concern over the viability of a sports car platform in the sate of the global economy in saying “I’m not sure it’s number one to carve out some territory in the supercar market.”  Tempting BMW to possibly consider other body styles outside of the supercar realm while still delivering high performance.

BMW’s interpretation of a supercar platform called the Z10 ED would likely be the following:

-Gross weight of 3,080 lbs or less

– Implementation of BMW’s Efficient Dynamics

– Front-rear drive car

– Increased performance from a turbocharged inline 6 cylinder producing approximately 400HP while reducing CO2 output

– Increased “green” technologies to be showcased with this platform

With BMW’s focus primarily on “going green” with its next supercar, this begs the question: Will this build a niche for Audi to release the R8 V12 TDi powered by the same V12 that ran at Le Mans in the R10TDi last year? We think the answer is a resounding yes.
