The folks at Xcar are a lucky bunch. They get to drive some of the most incredible supercars known to man on a regular basis. Everything, from Ferraris to Lamborghinis to Bugattis, has been through the Xcar parking garage. So when they make a list of the top five best sounding cars on the road, you better take their word for it, because they’ve heard it all. And that’s exactly what they’ve done.
Of course, the list is dominated by European exotics, with cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and Bugatti Veyron making the list, at numbers 4 and 3, respectively. But the real surprise was the Audi R8, which came it at number 5. What’s even more surprising is the choice of R8 for the list. It isn’t the brand spanking new V10 Plus. Nope, it’s the first generation R8 and the V8 nonetheless.
The first-gen R8 V8 is a special machine. Mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox, it could be the last pure mid-engine supercars in the history of the automobile. It’s naturally aspirated, displaces 4.2 liters, puts out 424 hp and creates one gnarly sound. The noise that emits from the quad tailpipes is one of power and beauty. It’s violent and elegant. In fact, I agree with the choice of the Audi R8 V8 over the V10. The V10 sounds too Lamborghini-ish, as it comes from the Italian brand. But the V8 sounds pure and mechanical. It sounds wonderful.
I’m genuinely and happily surprised by the inclusion of the Audi R8 V8, as it’s one of my favorite supercars. It would be easy to phone this video in and pick 5 Italian exotics. But the folks at Xcar properly care about cars and made this list the right way, by picking actually beautiful sounding cars. The rest of the list is also excellent, so it’s worth watching regardless of the inclusion of an Audi, but because the R8 V8 is on the list, this video is a must watch. Check it out.
