Audi unveiled the second-gen Q7 several days ago so naturally someone decided to compare it to arch rival from Bavaria in an Audi Q7 vs BMW X5 styling duel. Both cars are in their second generation but although the duo fits in the highly competitive SUV segment, the new Q7 has been criticized by many due to its high-riding station wagon appearance whereas the X5 still looks like a proper SUV.
While Ingolstadt’s styling might not be to everyone’s liking, some big changes have occurred underneath the skin and everybody will be happy to hear the Q7 has lost a whopping 325 kg and now the lightest version (equipped with a 3.0 TDI) tips the scales at 1,995 kg (4,398 lbs) while the BMW X5 xDrive35i weighs 2,105 kg.
The overhauled Audi Q7 is actually 37mm shorter & 15mm narrower than the model it replaces but this hasn’t affected the interior cabin. On the contrary, as there is an additional 21mm between the first two rows of seats while headroom has increased by 41mm at the front and 23mm at the back.
Since this is an Audi Q7 vs BMW X5 duel, we should mention the Q7 is still longer than the X5 (5.05 meters vs 4.88 meters) and has a longer wheelbase (2.99 meters vs 2.93 meters). It’s also wider (1.97 meters vs 1.93 meters) and sits lower (1.74 meters vs 1.76 meters). While the X5 has analog dials, Audi decided to opt for a fully customizable digital instrument cluster packing a 12.3-inch TFT display which looks significantly more attractive and has more functions.
It will be a while until the second generation Audi Q7 will hit the streets as deliveries are planned to kick off in the summer but order books will open in Germany in the spring from approximately €61,000.
