Audi Q5 vs Genesis GV70 — Autocar Test

Genesis is fully engaged in its pursuit to take down the Germans at their own game. Each new Genesis model seems laser-focused on specific German segments occupied by Germans. When it comes to the midsize premium crossover segment, one of the very most popular cars on sale is the Audi Q5 and the all-new Genesis GV70 is primed and ready to take it on.

In this new comparison test from Autocar, we get to see if the newcomer GV70 can take on the established rival Q5. More interestingly, we also get a look at how the UK market sees Genesis, as it’s a newer brand there than it is here.

Interestingly, the Genesis GV70 in this test used a 2.2 liter turbocharged four-cylinder diesel engine, which we don’t get here in the ‘States. It makes 207 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to all four wheels. While the Audi Q5 in this test used a 2.0 liter TDI turbo-diesel that makes 201 horsepower and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch auto and all-wheel drive.

The Audi Q5 is a great crossover if you want something calm, premium, sophisticated, well-built, and comfortable. But even the staunches of Audi fans have to admit that it’s about as excited as doing your taxes. The Q5 has dull steering, sluggish handling, and a whisper quiet cabin. That’s great for comfort but not for fun.

While the Genesis GV70 trades some of that comfort for a bit of driving fun. Its steering is more engaging (even if its steering wheel is a bit odd) and its chassis is more playful. It’s the more entertaining crossover to drive. Additionally, it comes with better dealer services; when you need it serviced, someone comes and picks it up and replaces it with a loaner car.

However, the Audi Q5 is more familiar, its tech is better, and its more comfortable and quiet to drive. Plus, if you want a proper driver’s crossover, you get an Alfa Romeo Stelvio.

So which one is best? You’ll have to read the Autocar comparison and find out but it’s worth it because it’s an unusual pairing.
