Mat Watson at Carwow isn’t afraid to put relatively obscure cars against each other to see which one does best in a serious of tests. It’s what makes a lot of Carwow’s videos more interesting than most. In this new one, he pits the a performance SUV — the BMW X3 M40i — up against two… hybrids — the Audi Q5 TFSI e and Volvo XC60 Polestar .
In this new video, we see these three very different crossovers compete in two drag races and more to see which is best.
The Audi Q5 TFSI e is the plug-in hybrid version of the brand’s most popular SUV and it uses a 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor to make 367 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The other hybrid in the test, the Volvo XC60 T8 Polestar, also uses a 2.0 liter four-cylinder but its engine is both turbocharged and supercharged and combined with an electric motor. Total system power is 405 horsepower and 498 lb-ft of torque. That’s a lot.
Lastly, it’s the BMW X3 M40i, which is an old-school performance machine in the sense that it uses a 3.0 liter turbocharged I6 with 355 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.
So which is fastest in a straight-line? Well, it’s not hard to imagine, it was the Bimmer. While not the least powerful car in the test, it’s the lightest by far and doesn’t have to mess with any hybrid assistance. So it just fires off the line and gains an early lead it never even comes close to giving up.
The hybrid Audi Q5 was dead last but did an honestly impressive 13.7 second quarter-mile, which is not bad at all for a hybrid crossover. It’s not fast enough to beat the X3 M40i but that’s also a genuine performance SUV, one that’s not designed to get great fuel economy.
If you want to see how these three competed in other tests, you’ll have to watch the video. Cheers.
