We just recently learned that the world reveal for the Audi e-tron will happen on September 17, which will be the first of three new fully-electric Audi vehicles to launch by 2020. We don’t know for sure what the other two are going to be but it’s possible that one of them will be an electric supercar to replace the Audi R8. We say that because the newly announced Audi PB 18 e-tron, an all-electric supercar concept, will be making its worldwide debut at Pebble Beach in a few weeks.
The Pebble Beach Concourse d’Elegance is one of the most prestigious car shows in the world and the most prestigious car show in America. It’s where many of the world’s most wealthy car owners go to show off their high-priced classics and exotics, as well as where many of the world’s most high-end automakers go to debut their latest and greatest.
At this year’s Pebble Beach, the Audi PB 18 e-tron (PB stands for Pebble Beach, not Peanut Butter as I had hoped) will dawn as an all-electric supercar concept. The reveal will take place at the famous Laguna Seca racetrack on August 23, which makes a bit of sense. The ’18’ in its name pays homage to the highly-successful Le Mans-winning Audi R18 e-tron race car, a legend of the modern motorsport era. So it’s only fitting that the new Audi PB 18 e-tron be debuted on one of the world’s great race tracks.
The design of the Audi PB 18 e-tron was also done by the new Audi Design Loft in Malibu, California, which makes its debut at Pebble Beach fitting as well.
We expect this concept to be a prelude to an actual road car. It’s no coincidence that Audi claims the R8 will be killed off by 2020, then announces there will be three new EVs to debut by 2020 and then announces an all-electric supercar concept. In Audi’s press release, it describes the PB 18 e-tron as a “Futuristic electric design study for the performance enthusiast driver”. So it’s clearly meant to be a road car and not a racing car.
The teaser photos Audi released also looks like a road car. In fact, it looks like a futuristic Audi R8 that’s been stepped on and squashed flatter. And that’s exciting news, as there’s so much potential in an all-electric supercar, especially with Audi’s all-wheel drive know-how. It could be one of the absolute best performance machines on the planet when it debuts.
While the Audi PB 18 e-tron will make its debut at Laguna Seca on August 23, it will be subsequently shown off at the Quail the following day, Laguna Seca again following that and finally at the Pebble Beach Concept Lawn on August 26. We can’t wait for this and we will have boots on the ground there to see it in person. Stay tuned.
