Several days ago Audi detailed its Le Mans triumph and now they are doing the same thing for their Nürburgring 2014 win. Audi’s R8 LMS ultra cars in the Nürburgring 24 Hours since 2009 have managed to obtain no less than five victories in the SP9 GT3 class (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2014) and two overall wins in 2012 and this year. Moreover, the customer sport race car has enjoyed six overall victories (Spa 2011, Zolder 2011, Nürburgring 2012, Spa 2012, Zolder 2012, Nürburgring 2014) along with a total of 11 class victories in endurance 24-hour races until today.
Audi’s R8 LMS ultra with the chassis number 14 0611 completed 159 laps at the 2014 Nürburgring which means it covered a remarkable distance of 4,035.102 km while the average speed was of 167.435 km/h. It thus took down the previous record of 156 laps (3,958.968 km) established in the 2011 season. Thanks to this result, Audi is now the sole automaker that has managed to go beyond the 4,000 km mark at the Nürburgring.
The winning Audi R8 LMS ultra from Phoenix Racing and driven by Haase / Mamerow / Rast / Winkelhock pitted 19 times during the 24-hour endurance race and used 20 sets of Michelin tires. Audi Design was in charge of creating the liveries of the winning models for 2014 Le Mans (R18 e-tron quattro) and 2014 Nürburgring (R8 LMS ultra).
On a related note, the TT RS from Team Raeder Motorsport and driven by Elmar Deegener / Jürgen Wohlfarth / Christoph Breuer / Dieter Schmidtmann won the SP 3T class ahead of their Audi colleagues at LMS Engineering. In the SP 4T class, Franjo Kovac / Fredrik Lestrup / Kurt Thiim / Martin Tschornia in a TT RS took home the win as well.
