Audi has disclosed plans to roll out a second-life program for depleted EV batteries.
The current crop of batteries made by Audi are designed to last for at least eight years or 150,000 km, with the average EV owner doing approximately 18,000 km annually. Pretty soon, the obsolete batteries will be useful again as Audi wants to install them in the electrical grid to work with solar technology as a way to harvest power during daylight and store it to discharge the energy in the night.
A test site has already been established in the vicinity of Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt where there are now two containers. The first one has a 20 kW photovoltaic solar array encompassing four traction batteries, while the other contains the necessary connection and control tech. This second container makes use of a DC / AC convertor that has to convert current from DC to AC at a 400V operating voltage.
Audi estimates they will be able to utilize such containers in conjunction with fast-charging stations working at 250 kW to allow EV owners charge their cars. When not in use, the containers will work as a buffer for renewable energy providers like solar and wind power. Further down the line, Audi aims to provide a full home kit and also boost power draw capabilities to as much as 500 kW.
