Audi made its mark on the world in rally racing. It wasn’t until the fire-breathing Audi Quattro dominated rally stages that car enthusiasts too Audi seriously and it’s been an icon of the industry ever since. However, in more recent years, Audi has actually been absent from rally racing, having pulled out of it some time ago. However, now there will at least be some four-ringed representation in the WRC, as former rally champion and EKS owner Mattias Ekstrom has just announced that an Audi A1 Quattro rally car will be joining the team.
“When the new generation of Audi A1 was launched, we knew we want to build something out of it,” said Ekstrom.
“And since everyone knows my passion for rallying, it quickly became clear that we will build a rally car. For now, this car is just for our own use, but when we will be satisfied with its performance, we will offer it for rent or purchase to other competitors.”
Under the hood is a 1.6 liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 263 horsepower, which will be paired with a five-speed sequential gearbox, and all-wheel drive. It also looks the business, with a classic yellow and white livery that gives us visions of the old-school Ur Quattro rally car.
Former FIA Junior WRC champion Emil Bergkvist will be driving the car during development; first on gravel, then snow, then on tarmac.
The EKS team has developed the Audi A1 Quattro rally car in Rally 2-specficiation, which will allow it to race in WRC2 and WRC3 categories. “The Rally2 kit provides a unique price-performance balance for competitors, but in this case, it is also combined with a legendary brand and a glorious body kit.” said Ekstrom.
In the video below, you can see the Audi A1 Quattro rip through snow and it looks awesome doing it. It’s also just great to see an Audi back in rally racing.
