As technology progresses, cars are gradually becoming rolling computers as automakers are eager to cram in features that make our lives easier behind the wheel. More hardware means greater complexity in terms of software, which can be a real pain to sort out. The Volkswagen Group is learning this the hard way as it had no other way but to stop deliveries of two key models – Golf and Octavia.
Both ride on the MQB Evo platform and therefore share a lot of the components hidden under their significantly different skins. During a routine quality assurance check, VW discovered the issue on the Golf Mk8, which prompted the company’s Czech division to do the same with its Octavia. It seems the software issue has to do with the online connectivity feature of the two successful compact cars. Specifically, there’s a problem with the emergency call assistant as it may not work as advertised.
Naturally, Audi is also investigating the issue as its new A3 is heavily related to the two models. The announcement was made by a company spokesperson in an interview with German magazine Automobilwoche – a sister site of Automobile News Europe. The same publication also learned from SEAT the Leon is also being investigated as it could have the same problem.
VW told Der Spiegel it’s working on a fix and should be ready through a software update by the middle of June. While customer deliveries are halted until then, it doesn’t mean production is also stopping. The company will still pump out Golfs and store them until the fix will be ready before shipping the cars to clients.
It remains to be seen whether the production of the A3, Octavia, and Leon will continue while VAG is working to fix the problem. Production of all four cars recently resumed at the European factories as the automotive industry is slowly recovering from the problems generated by the coronavirus pandemic.
