Should I Buy An Audi Extended Warranty?

When buying an expensive luxury car, such as an Audi, the thought of having to actually pay to repair some of its very expensive thoughts can be worrisome. Sure, it might be under a factory warranty when you buy it but what about when that warranty runs out? Do you go shopping for a third-party Audi Extended Warranty? Do you choose Audi’s own extended warranty? That thought can keep anyone up at night.

Audi offers its customers three VSP (Vehicle Service Protection) plans to help ease their minds about potential upcoming repairs. In addition to an Audi’s factory warranty, VSP plans can cover everything from engine parts to suspension parts to hybrid powertrain parts.

There are three different VSP plans to choose from, so customers can pick the plan that works best for them and their budgets. The three different plans are Powertrain Coverage, Gold Coverage and Platinum Coverage and we’ll discuss them a bit so you can understand which might be best for you.

Powertrain Coverage

This is the least expensive of the three VSP plans and it’s also the most basic. Essentially, it does exactly what it says it does — covers the powertrain. However, it also covers more than just the powertrain but also the drivetrain. The Powertrain Coverage includes your engine, transmission, transaxle or transfer case, drive axles and certain mild hybrid components.

Gold Coverage

Gold Coverage is the next step up and it includes everything in the Powertrain Coverage option but adds some additional coverage. For instance, Gold brings you additional coverage on your car’s front and rear suspension, climate control, fuel, electrical components and even more hybrid components.

Platinum Coverage

Platinum is the most comprehensive coverage option and essentially covers the entire car, though there are some exceptions. Anything specifically listed as “not covered” obviously isn’t included but most of those parts are wear items, such as spark plugs and wiper blades. However some of the additional components covered are big ones, such as steering, CV boots, navigation, audio and other technologies.

With any of the three coverage levels, you can choose from three deductibles, which is the amount you pay out of pocket per covered repair:

  • $0 (Expect higher premiums)
  • $100 disappearing (You don’t pay if covered repairs are done by the selling dealer.)
  • $250 (Expect lower premiums)

Additional Benefits

All three plans come with the same additional benefits and these can be quite helpful as well. For instance, your network of dealerships spans the country, as any certified Audi dealer in America can work on your car under these VSP plans. You also get 24-hour roadside assistance, including flat-tire assistance, battery assistance and fluid delivery, though there’s a $100 occurrence fee for those .

Each plan also comes with a $100 towing reimbursement to get your car to the nearest certified Audi dealer. If your car needs a long repair, you also get rental car reimbursement of up to $35 per day for ten days.

If you’re unhappy with any of these plans, you can cancel at any time, though there’s a $50 fee after thirty days. If you sell your vehicle, you can transfer the warranty for $50.

Deciding to pull the trigger on one of these coverage plans can be a bit confusing, so we’ll break down some of the pros and cons for you. As far as pros go, they’re pretty obvious. You can comprehensive coverage on your car in case of a problem, which can end up saving you thousands. Some of the parts including in these coverage plans are extremely expensive and only having to pay the deductible for their repairs can be life-saving.

The 24-roadside assistance is also fantastic and can be a life-saver as well, just in cast of an emergency. The towing reimbursement can also come in handy, as you can get your car towed to a nearby Audi dealer who might be able to get you right back on the road that day and the tow might not cost you anything.

Also, being able to transfer the warranty is great. Having that warranty can be a big selling point for any potential buyers. Being able to give them a warranty with the car might be what gets the deal done and gets your car sold when it comes time.

Nothing in life is perfect and there are, of course, cons to the VSP plans. For starters, even the most comprehensive of plans has its own limitations. Also, any damage caused by an accident, weather-related issues or vandalism isn’t covered. So if someone breaks one of your windows, it’s not covered, or if your car gets peppered with hail and something is damage, no beans.

Any repairs needed due to pre-existing conditions are also off the table. That’s always such a gray area and can be very tricky, which is why that’s always something to watch out for.

Lastly, the $100 towing reimbursement is sort of low. Depending on the State or the area you’re in, that $100 can be used up in ten miles. So the two could still end up costing you a ton of money.

Is an Audi VSP Worth It?

Without trying to sound too much like a fence-sitter, it’s entirely up to you, whether or not a VSP plan is worth it. If you drive a lot and live a busy life, it’s probably worth it. Sure, it will cost you some extra money but if you’re putting hard miles on your car, there’s a good chance it will save you a ton of money.

Plus, if you’re a busy person and don’t have the time to work on anything yourself or worry about securing parts for the right price, it can take the headaches out of car repairs.

Third-party extended warranties provide peace of mind and convenience, as well as the flexibility that the Audi dealer warranty can’t. You can use your favorite shop rather than only working with dealers. There are trade-offs to either option, but a warranty service contract is definitely something to consider either way.

It’s worth doing the research to get the best value in an Audi extended car warranty. In our research of the best extended warranty companies, we found that most aftermarket warranty providers offer five or more levels of coverage.

Also, you can usually find a plan that will cover the vehicle’s high-tech items. Some offer plans specially for these items.
