The Audi Q8 is the brand’s next new SUV darling. While the Audi e-tron is the bigger deal, being that it’s the first-ever fully-electric car from Audi ever, it’s the Q8 that will make the brand the big bucks. The Q8 will sit above the Q7 in the brand’s model lineup, being more luxurious-higher-tech and, crucially, sportier.
Auto Express recently had the chance to take a ride in a prototype Audi Q8 and, apparently, it differs quite a bit from the current Q7. It’s considerably sportier than the Q7, thanks to a newly calibrated air suspension that more greatly differs Dynamic and Comfort modes in the Drive Select system.
Though, that doesn’t mean it’s going to feel like a sports car on the inside. In fact, Auto Express seems to think that its cabin feels more luxurious than its German coupe-like SUV rivals. Though, it should if it’s more expensive. “Our early impression of the Audi Q8 is that it feels a cut above the BMW X6 and Mercedes GLE Coupe, but that’s not surprising given it’s a bit larger and will be more expensive. The cutting-edge cabin is the cherry on top.” said AE.
Inside, the Q8 shares a lot of its design with the new Audi A8, A7 and all-new A6. So it gets the brand’s new dual-touchscreen MMI system with haptic feedback and the same semi-autonomous technology. However, journalists who were invited on this pre-pro ride along didn’t get to see all of the interior so we’ll see how/if it differs from its aforementioned siblings.
Powering the Audi Q8, at least for this exercise, is a 3.0 liter turbocharged V6 TDI that makes 286 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque. According to AE, it’s capable of 0-60 mph in under six seconds, which is pretty good for a diesel SUV as big and heavy as the Q8.
We can’t wait to drive the upcoming Audi Q8 and see if it’s really as sporty as Audi claims. It certainly has the looks over the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class Coupe, let’s hope it has the drive over them as well.
