REPORT: Audi e-tron SUV to be Renamed Q8 e-tron With Facelift

In Audi’s lineup, there’s no car more in need of a facelift than the Audi e-tron. A good car in isolation, the e-tron falls flat when compared to many of its other competitors. It lacks the range, the power, and the tech to keep up with cars like the Tesla Model X and now the BMW iX. Thankfully, it’s getting that facelift, which should bring some new looks, maybe some new cabin tech, and potentially a bit of extra range. We’re also hearing that it might get a name change.

 

According to this report from Automobilwoche , the Audi e-tron will have its name changed to Audi Q8 e-tron, which is a bit less confusing now that there are so many other e-tron models.

 

This report comes after hearing that Audi would replace the e-tron entirely, with a completely new model called the Q8 e-tron. Now, it seems that the current Audi e-tron will get this new name as a holdover, until the Q8 e-tron comes out.

 

Interestingly, the report also claims that this upcoming Audi Q8 e-tron will also get an upgraded battery pack, with a focus on improved efficiency to increase its range. At the moment, the existing Audi e-tron barely crests 200 miles of range, which just isn’t good enough to compete in the segment. However, if Audi could even bump it to 250 miles or 275 miles, it could drastically extend the shelf life of the Q8 e-tron, until a newer, longer-range model can replace it.

 

Audi certainly has the battery tech to do so but the main question is whether it can fit said battery into the future Audi Q8 e-tron, as it’s built on an old modified MLB architecture, which lacks the proper space for a large battery pack. Which is one of the reasons why the current Audi e-tron weighs so much, all the modifications to fit a battery, plus the battery itself, added a ton of weight.

 

Hopefully this comprehensive facelift, along with its name change, can help the Audi Q8 e-tron sell a bit better than the e-tron is selling now. The more good EVs we have on the road, the better.
