Audi compact MPV rendered, but won’t happen

“Automotive manipulator” Theophilus Chin has digitally imagined a hypothetical Audi compact MPV. Before you get your hopes up too high for a people carrier with the four ring logo, it should be mentioned that earlier this year we heard from Audi’s development chief Ulrich Hackenberg there won’t be an MPV as the company doesn’t have plans to introduce a direct competitor for the BMW 2-series Active Tourer & Gran Tourer.

Such a model would have served as a spiritual successor of the A2, a model which failed because it was overly expensive due to its lightweight all-aluminum body. Even though Hackenberg admitted he is a big fan of the A2, it seems a revival is not being planned as Audi has analyzed the market and they say there wouldn’t be enough demand for such a model to justify the costs with development.

However, Audi might want to have a change of thought taking into consideration both arch rivals BMW and Mercedes-Benz think differently about the premium compact MPV segment as the two have models positioned in this segment and perhaps there would be more demand from a similar vehicle from Audi than the company estimate.

The next best thing to an Audi people-carrier in the compact segment is the Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan, but it doesn’t have the premium feel you only get with a car from Ingolstadt.
