Audi CEO Will Continue to Invest in Internal Combustion

We all know the internal combustion engine is on its way out and will eventually be replaced with electrification. However, that transition is likely going to take longer than we originally thought. With the way infrastructure and battery technologies are advancing, we’re seeing progress but it’s not fast enough to foresee a complete switchover anytime soon. Because of that, Audi is going to continue investing heavily in internal combustion engines (ICE).


During his recent interview with Focus.de, Audi CEO Markus Duesmann claimed that Audi would continue to invest in internal combustion. In fact, Duesmann feels that internal combustion “will live for a very long time,” he told Focus.

“That is why we are investing heavily in the development of combustion engines.” he continued.


Duesmann isn’t the first German automotive CEO to make this claim. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have both stated that, because the internal combustion engine is here to stay for many more years, continued investment is necessary. Reason being is that technologies have advanced so far that these ICE engines are more efficient than ever before. And if automakers can continue to improve them, their power and, most importantly, their efficiency, investing in such things is incredibly important.


If internal combustion engines are to stick around for at minimum another decade, then they must be as efficient as possible. The expense of making ICE engines efficient is well worth it, even if it might not be financially sound later on down the line. Car companies need to continue to improve gasoline and diesel engine emissions, no matter the cost.

Considering that Duesmann actually came from BMW, so he knows the marketplace from two different sides of the premium segment. So he’s not just speaking for Audi but for a lot of the German industry. So expect internal combustion to stick around for the foreseeable future.
