Ever since Iron Man drove the Audi R8 back in 2008, we’ve looked at Audi differently. The brand best known for created fast sedans and wagons was all of a sudden developing supercars that could rive the best from Italy and Germany. However, before 2008, no one would have ever thought Audi could do such a thing. But they should have, as Audi teased its desire to get into the supercar game far before that.
Back in 1991, yes 1991, Audi released a concept car that showcased its plans for the future. That concept was the Audi Avus Quattro Concept. In 1991, The Avus Quattro must have looked like the Starship Enterprise, because its design and technology was so far ahead of its time. So far ahead of its time, in fact, that Audi wasn’t actually capable of developing its engine yet.
Audi planned of showcasing its W12 engine, something that Audi would begin using in the late ’90s in the A8. Because the four-ringed brand didn’t have the W12 ready, they actually put a dummy engine in the Avus Quattro. That dummy engine was made out of wood…for real.
But its wooden engine isn’t what makes the Audi Avus Quattro one of the coolest concepts of all time. It’s the styling that puts it in history. Just look at it, it would look good today, 25 years later. Imagine what people though in 1991? I mean just look at the clothes of the people in the pictures compared to the Audi. It’s like they jumped into the future.
