The Audi A8 is the latest in a long line of massive luxo-barges designed to be both luxurious and nice to drive. However, this latest one has drastically prioritized the former over the latter. So it should fair very well in a luxury car competition, right? Australian publication Drive decided to find out.
In this competition, the Audi A8 3.0 TFSI takes on the BMW 530e, Lexus LS500h and the Mercedes-Benz CLS 450. Now, this isn’t the most apples-to-apples comparison test, as not all of these cars are in the same class.
For instance, the BMW 5 Series doesn’t compete with the Audi A8, it competes with the Audi A6. The Audi A8 is not a competitor to the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class, that would be the Audi A7. And while the Lexus LS500h is a competitor to the A8, this specific one is a hybrid, while the Audi is not. So the competitors are a bit all over the place. Still, it’s interesting to see how they stack up.
With the Audi A8 being the most expensive car of the test, and this being a test of luxury cars, you’d imagine that it would win. However, it doesn’t. Despite being incredibly opulent, luxurious, stable and high-tech, it’s actually the BMW 530e that won the test. The Bimmer’s blend of comfort, driving dynamics, hybrid powertrain and lower price made it more attractive to Drive than the A8.
The big Audi did come in second place, though, beating out the Benz and the Lexus. It’s just more luxurious, more high-tech and more enjoyable to be in, especially in the back seat. While that might not be entirely fair to say, being that the A8 is significantly more expensive than everything else in the test, it’s still the better luxury car. We’d like to see it take on the BMW 7 Series, though, and not the 5er and see how they stack up in a more even matchup.
