Audi A4 is a Motor Authority “Best Car to Buy” Nominee

Now in its ninth generation, the B9 Audi A4 is impressing most of the automotive world. While it isn’t as exciting or as dynamic as, say, a BMW 3 Series or Jaguar XE, it’s an incredible all-around package and one that makes sense to most buyers. Which is why the new Audi A4 is one of Motor Authority’s “Best Car to Buy” nominees.

As automotive journalists, we can drone on about steering feel and emotion and dynamics until we’re blue in the face. But the fact of the matter is that people actually have to buy these cars and live with them everyday. And the majority of customers, about 90 percent of them, couldn’t tell the difference between good steering feel and electroshock therapy. So cars have to be great to drive, great to live with and provide the sort of comfort, practicality and usability that makes life simpler. The Audi A4 does all of that better than almost any other car on the market, better even than some in higher price brackets.

With its new 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the Audi A4 develops 252 hp, putting it up there with the best in its class. It also boasts the only dual-clutch gearbox in its class, whereas every other competitor uses a standard torque-converter automatic. The two of those combined, with Quattro all-wheel drive, the A4 can get from 0-60 mph in the low-five second range, making it properly quick. It’s a great engine, too, as it’s smooth, responsive, powerful and efficient. The gearbox also fires off snappy shifts in manual mode, using the paddles, while also being smooth and comfortable in auto. Great powertrain.

With Quattro all-wheel drive, the Audi A4 won’t be capable of the tail-out antics its rear-drive competitors might be, but it will have far more sure-footed grip than any of its rivals. That gives buyers added confidence and piece-of-mind in poor weather, something you can’t put a price on. Sure, it isn’t light-your-hair-on-fire fun to drive like an E46 BMW 3 Series used to be, but even the current BMW 3 Series isn’t that anymore. Plus, the new A4 is good to drive. Really good, better than most of its rivals.

Throw that in with the fact that it’s more comfortable than its rivals, has a much better interior and far superior technology and the Audi A4 is the total package. Its new Virtual Cockpit is simply amazing to use and its suite of safety technology is second to none.

So while the Audi A4 won’t make you feel like Walter Röhrl from behind the wheel, it’s still damn fun to drive and offers an everyday package that its rivals will have a hard time matching. That’s why it’s a Best Car to Buy nominee.
