Audi A4 is a 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year finalist

We’re big fans of the new B9-generation Audi A4, here at QuattroDaily. Its blend of superb chassis capabilities, impressive technology and powertrain excellence make it a near-perfect everyday sport sedan. It’s both fun to drive and luxurious, making it adept at both the commute to work and twisty back roads on the weekends. Now, it seems as if we aren’t the only fans of the Audi A4, as it’s just been named a 2017 Motor Trend Car of the Year finalist.

The B9 A4 isn’t a perfect car, this much we know. Its steering could have more feel, it could be a bit more dynamic and exiting and it could look more interesting. However, it has more positives than negatives and that’s evident by the fact that MT is considering it for COTY.

Motor Trend was impressive by its chassis and technology most. The new Audi A4’s chassis, based on the new MLB platform, performed well through their usual battery of tests, which is impressive considering the gauntlet the MT usually puts its contenders through. They were also fans of the powertrain, Audi’s new 2.0 liter TFSI 252 hp four-cylinder engine and seven-speed S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. It also scored points for a spacious interior and capacious¬†trunk. But what MT seemed most impressed with was the A4’s technology. The Virtual Cockpit is brilliant and impresses nearly everyone who uses it and the A4’s is no different.

However, some things MT didn’t like so much, things like the uninspired design and lackluster build quality. The former we completely agree with. Its design does leave a lot to be desired and could have been far more daring while still keeping with the understated tradition of Audi styling. The interior, though, we’ve never had a complaint about, in both style and build quality. In fact, we find that the A4 has far better build quality that any other car in the segment. In a back-to-back test with the BMW Series, we felt that the A4 felt quite a bit better made than the Bimmer. But, nevertheless, that’s something they marked it down for.

Still, they felt that the Audi A4 was an overall good enough package to make it as a finalist. While we don’t think it will take the top spot and win COTY, we’re happy that the A4 was shown some love as one of the best new cars on the market.
