Our friends at BMWBLOG decided it would be a good idea to do a specs comparison between the Audi A3 Convertible and arch rival BMW 2-Series Convertible. If you are in the market for a compact open-top vehicle, these are probably the two best options on sale today and obviously the two have a lot in common. The Audi is the more affordable of the two, carrying a starting price in United States of $35,600 whereas the equivalent BMW begins at $38,850.
Both have a four-cylinder, 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine which in the Audi develops 220 bhp and 258 lb-ft whereas the motor in the BMW puts out 240 bhp and 255 lb-ft. Despite packing less power, the Audi is quicker by 0.1s in the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) which takes 5.9 seconds but the BMW makes up the lost terrain by achieving a higher top speed of 155 mph while the Audi will do only 130 mph.
In terms of fuel economy, the 2-Series Convertible would be a better choice as it can return 40 mpg, significantly more than the A3 Convertible which can do 32 mpg.
Let’s not forget that while the 2-Series Convertible is rear-wheel drive, the A3 Convertible comes with a front-wheel drive layout. At an additional cost, both cars can get an all-wheel drive system as select versions of the open-top 2-Series are available with xDrive while some versions of the open-air A3 Convertible can be configured with a quattro system.
