When we first saw the new Audi A1, we were really impressed. It featured some really fresh new looks, an ultra-snazzy interior and better tech than anything else in the segment. The only question left — How will it drive? In this new Auto Express test, the new A1 takes on the king of driving dynamics in the segment, the MINI Cooper.
For this test, the Audi A1 Sportback 30 (1.0 liter turbocharged three-cylinder) TFSI takes on the MINI Cooper 4 Door (1.5 liter turbocharged three-cylinder. Both cars are front-wheel drive and both cars get six-speed manual gearboxes. The MINI is more powerful, with 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque, compared to the Audi A1, which makes 114 hp and 147 lb-ft.
Both cars are hilariously slow, though. The MINI Cooper is slightly less slow, doing the sprint in 9.1 seconds, compared to the Audi’s 9.6 seconds. Both are glacial in their movements, though. So to make up for that lack of speed, they need to be fun to drive.
In that regard, the MINI again beats the Audi. It’s not that the Audi A1 is bad to drive, because it isn’t, but the MINI Cooper is just more lively and more fun. As MINIs typically are, to be honest.
However, the Audi A1 makes up for that with much better tech and a stylish interior. It also has more interior space for passengers and is more comfortable. Sadly, the MINI has a higher quality interior and is cheaper to start. Though, the MINI also gets more expensive with options, while the A1 is more reasonably well equipped.
So which is the better of the two cars? Well, you’ll just have to check out Auto Express’ comparison test. Though, it’s safe to say that if the Audi A1 loses, it’s due to its driving dynamics and performance. Things that will be fixed on the upcoming Audi S1.
