Volvo has introduced its brand new S90 set to compete in the crowded mid-size premium sedan segment.
It seems Audi has one more rival to worry about as the S90 is shaping up to be an interesting choice in this segment as it adopts a fresh exterior design combined with a luxurious interior cabin. The styling is a breath of fresh air in the segment and the car will certainly generate a large clientele that wants to try something else than the German A6 / E-Class / 5-Series trio.
Perhaps the biggest problem with the new S90 is the lack six- and eight-cylinder engines as Volvo will sell this exclusively with four-cylinder motors. This will certainly have an impact on sales since there are a lot of people out there that can’t imagine such a big and heavy car with a small four-cylinder under its hood.
On the other hand, one of the S90’s strong points is the multitude of safety and assistance systems, among which we mention the brake support function which will automatically apply the brakes during the day or night whenever the sensors detect moose, horses and elk. How cool is that?
Volvo will show off the new S90 in January at the Detroit Motor Show and after that it will go on sale in China, followed by Europe and then by United States. The sedan will also spawn a V90 wagon sometime in 2016 that will go head to head with the A6 Avant.
