The Audi RS5 is a great car. It’s a superb performance car, with great power and speed and it’s a great looking car as well. However, there’s certainly room for improvement and it’s mostly in terms of excitement. The RS5 delivers on paper but it doesn’t deliver as well in terms of thrills. So ABT Sportsline, one of the best Audi tuners on the planet, has given the RS5 a shot of fire and it’s called the ABT RS5-R.
ABT tuned the 2.9 liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine to 530 hp and 508 lb-ft of torque. That’s up from the 450 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque of the standard car. “On the ABT RS5-R, we get an additional 80 HP and 90 Nm (66 lb-ft) from the 2.9 liter biturbo V6, which has a very similar design to the engine in the first Audi RS4,” said ABT Sportsline CEO Hans-Jürgen. That implies that ABT can do the very same for the new RS4 Avant and that’s very exciting.
Thanks to the added power and torque, the ABT RS5-R can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.6 seconds, which bests Audi’s original claim of 3.9 seconds. We expect it to be even quicker than that in practice.
But ABT Sportsline didn’t just stop there. ABT gave the RS5-R a new exhaust and muffler system that increases the noise and gives it more of a thrilling sound. It also gets four carbon fiber-tipped tailpipes, which replace the two massive ovals of the standard RS5, all four of which are 102mm in diameter.
The ABT-tuned Audi RS5 isn’t just about power and performance, though, it also handles better. Thanks to a new coilover suspension setup, developed in-joint by ABT Sportsline and KW, the ABT RS5-R is now lower, firmer and sportier than the standard Audi RS5. It also sits on ABT SPORT GR 21-inch wheels, which replace the standard 19-inchers.
On the outside, the ABT RS5-R sets itself apart fro the Audi RS5 with some more aggressive body work, such as a new ABT front lip, ABT front aero winglets and an ABT front grille frame with RS5-R logo. There’s also a rear lip spoiler and diffuser. Almost all of which is made from glossy carbon fiber and it looks great.
