Since its launch, the Audi R8 RWD has been a fan-favorite among Audi enthusiasts, simply because it’s a rear-wheel drive, mid-engine supercar with a naturally-aspirated V10. What’s not to love? Now, fans are going to like it even more, as it’s getting a power bump, and some new options, for the 2022 model year.
For 2022, the Audi R8 RWD Performance gets a power increase from 532 horsepower to 562 horsepower. That’s a surprising bump in power; thirty extra ponies will actually be noticed in the real world. Torque went up a bit too, from 398 lb-ft to 406 lb-ft, but that’s not likely enough to be noticed. Still, the fact that Audi is giving the rear-wheel drive car even more power, despite the fact that the R8 is on its last legs, is nice to see.
The Audi R8 RWD also gets a couple of new packages; a Sports Exhaust Package and Dynamic Package. The former obviously brings a sports exhaust system, which gets black exhaust tips, but it also gets a four-button steering wheel with controls for the exhaust on it. The Dynamic Package bring 20-inch five-spoke, milled-cut, titanium finish wheels, along with carbon ceramic brakes, and racing shell seats. It’s probably worth it for the seats alone.
We’ve only driven the Audi R8 Performance Quattro, so we don’t know how different the R8 RWD feels by comparison. However, the very idea of a rear-wheel drive Audi R8 is enough to make us fall in love. How many rear-wheel drive, mid-engine, naturally-aspirated supercars are there anymore? Aside from the R8, just only the Huracan RWD can say the same and it shares its chassis and engine with the R8. So we love that the Audi R8 RWD exists and we also love the fact that, despite being on its way out, Audi keeps making it better.
