2022 Audi A8 and A8 L facelift unveiled with sophisticated design updates

Audi is keeping itself quite busy this week as after unveiling the extra-long A8 L Horch for the Chinese market on Monday and the spicy S8 facelift earlier today, it’s now taking the wraps of the updated A8 and A8 L. Naturally, the standard fullsize sedan along with its stretched sibling get just about the same visual revisions as the other two, including a slightly wider front grille.

One important novelty brought by the mid-cycle facelift is the addition of an S Line exterior package, which represents an absolute premiere for Audi’s flagship car. As with the lesser models, the S Line is essentially an appearance package to mimic the look of the fully fledged S model. It lends the A8 a sportier design without having to pay the substantial premium that comes with the S8.

There seems to be more chrome than before, along with a vast color palette that now includes several fresh metallic hues: Ultra Blue, District Green, Manhattan Gray, and Firmament Blue. Not only that, but Audi is also adding a few matte finishes: Glacier White, Floret Silver, Daytona Gray, and Terra Gray. At an additional cost, you’ll still be able to purchase the revised A8 with the black and chrome exterior packages that were offered on the pre-facelift model.

Not much has changed inside the cabin where we notice the familiar Audi Virtual Cockpit joined on its right side by the 10.1- and 8.6-inch touchscreens. In the back, an optional rear-seat entertainment system adds a pair of 10.1-inch displays, while the driver can spend extra on a head-up display. The infotainment system uses VW Group’s newest MIB3 setup with all the connectivity you’d want in a car.

Underneath the hood, you’ll find the usual suspects as the engine lineup has been carried over. All powertrains feature mild-hybrid tech to cut fuel consumption and emissions, and are linked to an 8-speed tiptronic transmission sending power to both axles courtesy of a standard Quattro system. The 3.0 TFSI, 4.0 TFSI, and 3.0 TDI units will be soon joined by another plug-in hybrid powertrain with the TFSIe setup.

There are no fewer than three optional driver assistance systems (Park, City, Tour) offering various stages of aid, with everything from surround view cameras and night vision to remote parking and adaptive cruise control. For audiophiles, the 2022 Audi A8 can be equipped with a Bang & Olufsen sound system with a whopping 23 speakers and 1,920 watts of power.

As with the spicy S8, the normal A8 and A8 L will be going on sale in Europe from next month. The standard-wheelbase model in Germany will carry an asking price of €99,500 before options.
