The new Audi A3 Sportback has been on sale in Europe for a few months now, which means more and more dealers have the posh five-door hatchback on display. One such dealer is Auto Bach GmbH in Germany where this high-end S Line 35 TDI example was filmed by YouTuber Audiview. At €54,489, this certainly isn’t cheap for a compact car, especially since we’re not dealing with an S3, let alone an RS3.
How does one get to jack up the price so much over a base €26,124 A3 Sportback? Well, paying more than double than the standard model gets you a lot of toys, including matrix LED headlights and those swanky 18-inch wheels. The S Line exterior and interior packages further contribute to the car’s high price tag, resulting in an A3 Sportback featuring a sophisticated look.
The fact that it’s a diesel with a DSG also means you’ll be paying more, but some might find the lack of Quattro all-wheel drive at this price tag to be a bit disappointing. The person who had the pleasure of configuring this car was quite generous ticking the boxes on the options list since this A3 Sportback boasts the upgraded MMI navigation and has a few cosmetic packages.
The use of Alcantara inside the cabin sends out a sophisticated vibe, as does the tiny shifter for the S Tronic, now featuring shift-by-wire tech. If you’re not familiar with this term, it means there’s no mechanical linkage between the gear shifting lever and the transmission. This setup has also been adopted by the A3’s less fancy sister models from the Volkswagen Group, such as the Skoda Octavia, SEAT Leon, and the VW Golf.
The electric front seats and tailgate do help try and justify the car’s steep price tag, but more than €54,000 remains a tough pill to swallow. That’s especially true if you look at Audi Deutschland’s configurator where the old RS3 is still listed, at only about €2,000 more than this car.
