There were two big players in contention for World Car of the Year, an award that was handed out yesterday at the 2019 NY Auto Show; the Audi e-tron and the Jaguar I-Pace. Before we talk about the winner, it’s important to note how incredible it is that the two main cars up for this award were fully-electric SUVs from traditional premium automakers. Now, on to the winner, which was the Jaguar I-Pace.
In fact, the I-Pace pulled off a very impressive hat-trick, with the World Car of the Year, World Design of the Year and World Green Car of the Year. That’s one hefty trophy case to lug back to the UK but we’re sure Jaguar is happy to do it.
We spent some time with the award-winning Jaguar I-Pace at the auto show and we can see why it won. It’s a very intriguing car and one that makes you want to get in and drive it, which is impressive for a luxury car. It also looks great, far better than any other electric car on the road, and has a very cool interior. So the design award is easy understand.
Also, it’s an impressive technical achievement. With an EPA-rated range of 234 miles, it has thirty more miles of range than the Audi e-tron. It’s also faster and is more exciting to drive. In fact, after speaking with some e-tron employees who’ve driven the I-Pace and even they admit it’s a great driving car.
After giving the I-Pace a comprehensive look, it’s hard not to fall in love with it. It has its own issues, of course, like its frankly poor infotainment system, but it’s a very lovable car. Hell, the Jag is even a bit cheaper than the e-tron. Oh, and it’s a Jaaggggggg.
We still think the Audi e-tron is likely the best electric SUV on the market. It still sports over 200 miles of range, looks great, is more spacious than the I-Pace, has the best technology in the segment, is the fastest charging EV on the market and has the best heat management of any EV as well. So it’s a superb all-around EV SUV and likely the most well-rounded. But congratulations to the Jaguar team, as the I-Pace is a very exciting and impressive electric car that’s deserving of its wins.
