We’ve already read quite a bit about the upcoming Audi S5 Cabriolet, the drop-top variant of the A5 Coupe. Audi released the info on the S5 Cabriolet last year and it boasts pretty much the exact same specs as the Coupe, but we’ve yet to see it in person. Now we have at the 2017 NAIAS (North American International Auto Show) Detroit Auto Show.
The power-folding soft-top can put itself down in 15 seconds and can put itself back up in 18 seconds. That’s faster than before but it’s also quieter than before. The new soft-top roof features far better acoustic insulation and better aerodynamics. That makes it quieter for passengers on the inside while driving with the top up, previously an issue on the first-gen S5 Cabriolet.
To keep the body as rigid as possible without the help of a roof, Audi had to add more structural bracing to the chassis. Audi did a far better job this time around, probably thanks to the new MLB chassis, and this second-gen S5 Cab is 40 percent stiffer than the car it replaces. Now, it won’t feel as choppy over rough pavement and will be quieter over bumps. However, it does add a bit of weight, roughly 88 lbs.
We think this second-gen S5 Cabriolet look better than the first-gen, as the new design language works better sans roof. Check out some live pictures of it from the NAIAS and see for yourself.
