Testing procedures for the 2016 Audi A8 have commenced, a model slated to go up against the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class and the forthcoming overhauled BMW 7-Series. Ingolstadt’s flagship model is bound to ride on a newly developed MLB platform which will also underpin the next generation Q7. MLB will be different than the updated MSB architecture developed by Porsche and programmed to be used on the next Panamera and Bentley Continental GT.
2016 Audi A8 test mules have already been caught on camera by spy photographers who are saying the vehicle’s dimensions will be largely maintained compared to today’s model but we should expect to see stretched front and rear tracks.
As far as engines are concerned, it is believed the A8 will make use of a newly developed V6 engine together with a revised V8 featuring cylinder deactivation technology. Chances are the W12 will also make a comeback in an updated version in order to comply with the strict Euro 6 emissions standards which will come into effect later this year.
The next generation Audi A8 will also be offered in a plug-in hybrid derivative but probably not from day one. It will have to compete with the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-In Hybrid while a possible full-electric A8 e-tron is also rumored to take on the Tesla Model S.
