American Audi enthusiasts seemingly constantly complain about the lack of different body style variations in the US compared to Europe. In the European market, there are tons of quirky Audi body styles, ranging from Avant to Sportback, though we have to fight tooth and nail in America to get any of them. This newest generation of Audi A5 Sportback is a good example, as it’s the second-generation model but the first generation to make it to America. The Audi RS3 had to be made into a sedan just so we could get it in America, rather than the brilliant Sportback, because Americans idiotically hate wagons and hatchbacks. However, it turns out that the American market will absolutely be getting one of the most highly anticipated performance Audis in the pipeline — the Audi RS5 Sportback.
It was previously rumored to be coming here but there was no official word that it would be. Now we have official confirmation from the best possible source for American Audi news.
At the recent 2018 Detroit Auto Show, CNET’s Roadshow had the chance to sit down with Scott Keogh, President of Audi USA, and he confirmed that the Audi RS5 Sportback will be coming ‘Stateside. “We’ll see the RS5 Coupe” he told Roadshow. “That car will be launching shortly and then we’ll have the RS5 Sportback as well”. Keogh said this immediately after talking about how he’s been one of the people begging Audi to bring some of its funkier cars to America. So it’s nice to see that the President of Audi America is championing newer body styles.
Even more exciting news than that, there’s going to be another previously European-only model coming to the ‘States but it’s a secret at the moment. “We have one other surprise that we’re working on but I’ll hold that one.” he said, to which he continued by saying “It’s a cool European model that we haven’t brought in yet and it’s been the number one car on my list.” To us, that sounds like the Audi RS4 Avant, as it’s really only one of two Audi Sport models sold in Europe that we don’t get here. The other one being the Audi RS6 Avant but that’s getting quite old, now, and is due to be replaced quite soon. So it’s more likely that we’ll be getting the RS4 Avant.
This may be the most exciting news from Audi we’ve heard in a long time. Not only is the Audi RS5 Sportback coming to America, which will make much more sense than the Coupe, but we’re also going to be getting a second previously Euro-only model and it could possibly be the Audi RS4 Avant. Even if it’s an Audi RS4 Sedan, sort of the way Audi gave is the RS3 Sedan over the Sportback, we’d be ecstatic.
One last note, it turns out that Scott Keogh, the President of Audi America, drives an Audi A4 Allroad. That sort of tells you all you need to know about which secret European model is going to come ‘Stateside.
