BMW said laser headlights will be available for the i8 starting this fall but it seems it won’t be the first production car of its kind to feature this technology as the first one to hit the market will be this Audi R8 LMX in the summer. It’s probably the final edition of the R8 as the supercar will soon get a second generation and this latest iteration will be limited to 99 units.
In Germany it carries a starting price of 210,000 euros and in return customers will be getting a special R8 fitted with the V10 5.2-liter engine delivering 570 bhp and 540 Nm sent to the quattro all-wheel drive system with help from a 7-speed S tronic gearbox. The coupe needs 3.4 seconds until 100 km/h and it will keep on accelerating until it hits a top speed of 320 km/h.
The Audi R8 LMX wears an Ara Blue paint and has received a fixed rear wing as well as carbon fiber flics. It can also be visually distinguished by its carbon fiber ceramic brakes, glossy black tailpipes and unique 19-inch rims.
For the interior Audi has prepared Fine Nappa leather-wrapped seats, Ara Blue accents, Sepang Blue contrast stitching along with a matte carbon fiber trim, illuminated door sill plates and an Alcantara headliner.
Those laser headlights feature four high-power laser diodes emitting a white light at a 5,000 Kelvin color temperature. These lights are automatically activated at 60 km/h and Audi says they improve visibility and safety, The R8 LMX also comes with a camera-based sensor system that has the ability of detecting other vehicles in order to actively modify the light pattern as a method not to disturb the other cars participating in traffic.
Deliveries of the Audi R8 LMX limited edition are set to commence this summer.
